Yo Mama's Grill

Socorro. NM

November 4, 2018

Way back when I went to college in the little town of Socorro, this building was a franchise-operation greasy-spoon where one could play table-top games all night long uninterrupted even by service. Those days are long gone, and this little town is all the better for it!

We stopped in at Yo Mama's Grill on our way home from the southernmost reaches of the state. Perhaps it was the spicing of hunger that made the visit memorable and tasty, or perhaps it was just that good. The portions were large, to the point that despite being absolutely ravenous when we arrived, we ended up popping more than half of each of the two appetizers we ordered in the cooler and finishing them the next day. Turns out the giant wedges of mozzarella not only come to the table at the ideal temperature for gooey, stringy, cheesy joy, they reheat marvelously in a toaster oven. The Spinach Artichoke dip was absolutely brimming with identifiable artichoke chunks, and the notably fresh salsa accompanying it was a particularly excellent pairing that I've not seen anywhere else that I can recall. The cheesy, creamy, chunky, spinach-and-artichoky dish also reheated marvelously in the toaster oven the next day. I would have given my eye-teeth for either of these dishes when I was actively attending NMT.

The steak that Raz had for his main was cooked to absolute perfection, and wonderfully juicy without requiring any extra sauce. This is saying something, considering he orders his steak much closer to well-done than I do, and I generally find anything more cooked than my usual a little on the dry side. I wish he hadn't opted out of the gravy on the mashed potatoes, though, since they were obviously vehicles for the missing sauce.

My Tech Burger was everything an alumn could want in a dish named for her alma mater. The thick, meaty, and completely satisfying half-pound patty was well complimented by bold swiss and creamy avocado. Let us not forget the added taste and textural joy of hefty slabs of smoky, thick-cut bacon or the toasted bun. Crisp Letuce, juicy tomato, and pickle rounded out the mountainous burger, and I admit I actually had some difficulty getting my mouth to open wide enough to enjoy the fully rounded experience of each bite. It was well worth the uncomfortable stretching though, and the seasoned fries that come with it are hand-cut perfection.

I can't say we would drive the 80+ miles down here just to visit, but Yo Mama's is definitely on the top of our list for next time we're attending 49ers or stopping through on the way home.
