WOW Diner
Milan, NM
June 16, 2019
The name is not wrong. We were in the Grants area and decided to drive a wee bit further to the little town of Milan to have breakfast this morning. Driving a little off the beaten path to find this place, we were tickled by the 1950s-style stainless steel and tile building, its art deco curves and composit building materials making us wonder if it had been around since the 50s, but it was closer to I-40 than route 66, so probably not. Anyway, we found the diner vibe to be honest rather than manufactured kitsch. The whole staff had that amazing small-town New Mexico hospitality you just don't find as a visitor in the obvious local favorite hang-out other places. Though I also imagine a heafty portion of the business here is from hungry truckers filling up at nearby travel centers, so that also accounts for the kindness to strangers. But we were here for the food, so let's get to it.
I don't usually eat so early, so I had a half-portion of biscuits and gravy, while Raz ordered an omelette. The 3-egg omelette is built-to-order, and he had bacon, mushrooms, onions, jalapeno, and ghost cheese. No, that's not a misprint, ghost cheese is apparently a spicier version of pepper-Jack, and it packs a satisfying if slow burn. Raz declared this the new best omelette ever. I believe that was the finest sausage gravy I have tasted to date, and the biscuits were delicious as well. All in all, we will make excuses to travel the hour + to Milan just to eat here.
