Tomo Steak and Sushi

Farmington, NM

July 3, 2019

The truth of the matter is that I grew up in Farmington, so I don't have high expectations of anything when I visit. Had I encountered Tomo anywhere else, I would have graded it even more harshly.

Raz and I pulled in on a Wednesday evening at just after 6pm. While this would be super early for a big city, we anticipated this would be during or just before the dinner rush for a smallish city with a seriously family-oriented culture. We initially thought the place wasn't open since the patio tables were all folded down and the parking lot was nearly empty. We were even more surprised by the lack of other patrons when we entered the very stylish and modern interior. The hostess at the front was pleasant and efficient and seated us rapidly, providing us a large, private table with a good view of the sushi bar and menus.

Strangely, our menus were different. Raz's contained a Hibachi section and mine did not. Thus, he ordered one of the dinners being created with flare and gusto at Hibachi tables, while I ordered one of the Teriyaki specials that came in a sizzling plate. Mind you, both our meals were coming from the rear kitchens, no dramatic fire and knife work for us. I may have had more inspiring words and a fonder memory if we'd done the dinner-and-show experience of the Hibachi table.

Our meals were over $20 per plate, which was a big ticket for a little meal, especially considering that the flavor quality and mouth-feel was similar to Panda Express. Again, we are well aware that experience is different if you're getting the chef-driven show with your meal. Thus, longer tale abbreviated, we recommend if you do find yourself at Tomo to ask for the Hibachi tables and not the dining room side. The building is gorgeous, and it has the most urban, club-like ambiance I've ever encountered in Farmington, but the price is *much* too high unless you're getting entertainment with the meal.
