Sparky's Burgers, BBQ & Espresso
Hatch, NM
May 13, 2018
Being desert dwellers, we were not terribly concerned about waiting for 10 - 15 minutes in full sun when it was only 85 degrees outside. However, we found it incredibly thoughtful when one of the proprietors brought sample bbq for the crowd and checked whether we all thought it warm enough to turn the misting system on. We all agreed it was, and soon there was a cool mist bringing the apparent outdoor temperature down to comfortable.
The outdoor queue also gave us time to appreciate the giant concrete sculptures and other mid-20th century kitsch artfully arranged along Franklin St, as well as to review the menu and decide on orders before we finally got to the single register inside the doors.
We ordered a World Famous and The Oinker. We paired them with wedge fries, and got the Crimson Pucker and Green Chile Lemonade to wash down the meal. We also put in our order for a chile-mango shake for dessert.
The lemonades and shake arrived even before I could complete basic hand washing in the wimsically decorated bathroom. I'm not entirely certain how refreshing spicy lemonade is when your meal is also smothered in chile, but R liked his very sweet green chile lemonade a lot. The Crimson Pucker was not as tart as the name implied, which was a win for me, though being an acidic drink, it did little to cool my mouth after the first few bites of my amazing burger.
People don't make a point of stopping to eat in Hatch, NM if they don't love green chile or can't handle the capsaicin bite. We love our green chile, and the crop that dressed our burgers today was a particularly good example for a slow burn. Moreover, the lovingly hand-crafted beef patties and melt-in-your-mouth pulled pork complimented the flavor of the green chile perfectly. The fries were also the epitome of perfection with crispy, seasoned outsides and soft, creamy insides.
When we had each polished off our respective burgers, we split the chile mango shake. The spice wasn't apparent at first due to the insulation of the fats in the soft serve. By the time we finished, though, my lips were definitely tingling.
All in all, this was a worthy stop, and one we're likely to repeat.
