Nick's Bar & Grill
Sydney, Australia
November 28, 2019
This review is late in coming because of the backlog of things to finish post-honeymoon. The current status of the Australian wildfires will likely have had impact on everything in the nation. That being said, our tour guide pointed us at Nick's because I very much wanted to try kangaroo whie visiting Sydney. We had a little trepidation once we saw the existing reviews being quite mixed, but decided to just go for it since we'd have a great story either way.
We figure the mixed reviews from locals was responsible for the relatively empty open-air dining room, especially since the whole of the quay was hopping during our primetime Thursday night visit. With no waiting, we were seated immediately and entertained by feisty seagulls while reviewing the menu.
The open air and under-packed seating area made for a wonderfully and unexpectedly intimate dinner experience. Our servers were just the right level of unobtrusively polite, which set the tone for a stellar night.
We liked our appetizer of a trio of dips and house-made crispy dip vehicles, but we loved our dinners. Ok, so I loved both dinners, but Raz only liked his own. See I had the kangaroo steak, and that is the leanest cut of any meat I have ever tried. I'm informed by much research that roo is super lean, so i expected this, and the meat was almost surprisingly tender despite the not-really-there marbling. Then there was the sauce, oh my goodness the sauce! I wake up craving it every so often. Yes, this is definitely the place to go as a tourist.
For tourist or local, though, you cannot go wrong with the locally caught tentacle beasts. That's what Raz had, and they were up there with the best Europe and the States have to offer. Well worth a visit for any tourist, and we would totally visit again if given the opportunity.
