The Stuffed Beaver
Jacksonville, FL
February 16, 2019
I love off-color humor, and the interior decorations rife with castors and roosters fit that bill marvelously. The nicknacks aside, we very much enjoyed the revitalization of what was obviously a Victorian-era brick building, now refitted with more modern and low-key restaurant design. It gave the overall feeling of being an unpretentious community hang-out that one could bring family, friends, or romantic interests to without feeling self-conscious.
Now to the food!
I ordered the Croque Monsieur, which is one of my favorite sandwich concepts of all time. Stuffed beaver not only did not disappoint, they gave me such a generous portion that it took two of us to finish it! Of course, that was in no small part because the better-half decided that I needed to order a snack-size poutine to go with it. I went with the plain, because poutine is a classic comfort dish that really needs no other dressing. I'm not sure anyone actually orders this hearty feast during the long, hot, sultry summer, but it was still chill enough outdoors to warrant long sleeves...
Raz got the Jager Poutine, which is poutine with added popcorn chicken. When it arrived, he got miffed with himself for not ordering Veggie, which is precisely what we will get if we're ever back in the area. This isn't to disparage the Jager Poutine in any way, it's a solid, comforting dish. Plus, all the poutines are served in to-go containers, so they quickly and easily become road-snacks.
We topped everything off with a Castor Tail, which was the perfect finale to the way-too-calorically-intensive meal. The pastry itself was delightful, and the apple-cinnamon spread was just heavenly.
