Packer Saloon and Cannibal Grill
Lake City, CO
June 9, 2018
We chose this place based on a dark, twisted sense of humor that was titillated by the name. We are quite glad we did too. There was no 4G, no 3G, and barely even cell reception in Lake City today. The lack of cell-phone wielding locals everywhere we visited gives me the impression that this is a usual state, but it meant I couldn't check in at the time of my visit.
Having grown used to this digital appendage, and the inadvertent self-isolation that goes with it, I was a bit surprised by the boisterous parties at the multiple full tables and bar having cross-conversation. The servers and bartenders joined right in, reminding me very much of the few pubs I had opportunity to visit in the UK. For that old-fashioned ambiance alone, a stop here would be recommended.
The Bison Burger with bleu cheese I devoured was quite tasty. I did have to slather it liberally with condiments as it was not the juiciest of burgers ever, though that may also have been remedied by a different choice of cheese. The fries, which Raz talked me into and we paid a little extra for, were very run-of-the-mill.
Raz's scalloped potatoes, on the other hand, were inspired and delicious. The Pork Osso Bucco that they accompanied was melt-in-your-mouth tender and my mouth waters at the memory. The sauerkraut also on that plate Raz described as "the real thing" and "the good stuff," but I can't judge that since a bite of any sauerkraut pretty much causes me to pucker just short of total face implosion.
We also shared the Stuffed Mushrooms for a starter, though I saved description for last since they were the best. I only vaguely looked at the description of the dish, leaving my tongue to guess the recipe. There were so many subtle, complimentary flavors in the stuffing that I happily failed my self-imposed challenge. If we find our way back through Lake City at some point, I'll come back and order 2 sets of the mushrooms for myself and call that a perfect meal.
