Oporto
Sydney, Australia
November 25, 2019
This was the very first spot we stopped for food in Sydney, and it immediately became the standard by which we judged every other meal. The staff behind the counter was very friendly and courteous, and the food was prepared fresh, so it took close to 20 minutes from the time of order for our roasted chicken, Portugese salad, and spicy rice to be ready. Raz ordered the chicken "very spicy." Generally we don't expect much from that phrase outside our hometown, but we were very impressed with Oporto on their interpretation.
The spices added pack some significant Scovilles, and most importantly no flavor is sacrificed for the heat. The "very spicy" chicken was almost too picante for me to eat, but the absolutely amazing garlic sauce that was included cooled it to perfection and boosted the flavor to beyond comprehension.
We generally don't review chains or fast-food even in our widest travel, but Oporto made such a strong and positive impression that we had to sing some praises. After all, not only did we have the pleasure of super-spicy chicken, we had the fixin's too which were well worth a second and third trip back while we were in Sydney. That was mostly so I could try to figure out what they added to the rice to make its flavor so rich and savory.
You see, we don't have Oporto back home in the States, but now we're seriously wishing we did!
