When we pulled into Tehachapi to stretch our legs and find a little something for the road, we did not expect this beautiful country bakery right by the historic train depot. I went for a ham & cheese croissant right there, while Raz went for one of the breakfast bierocks. We picked out a few sweet pastries to eat later, and a second of the ham & Cheese croissants, and just as we were about to tally our purchases and pay, the bakers brought out the first of the beef & cabbage bierocks, and we got one of those too.

Let me start with the soft, buttery goodness that is the Kohnen's croissant. From there, let me tell you how amazing the crispy crust and soft crumb of the bierocks are, made only better by perfectly balanced savory fillings. It was all we could do not to turn around at the Arizona border and drive all the way back after we had our second set of pastries in order to pick up more.

We rather envy the residents of Tehachapi to have such a gem in their midst. We're already working on how to fit this little town into future road trips just so we can visit again!
