Injera Restaurant
Alameda, CA
August 30, 2019
We chose Injera because it was the closest to the airport, and we were starving after a full day and a significant flight. Never has a choice of convenience paid off in such great measure. Raz put together a sampler of gomen, kantisha, zignee, and lamb alicha. At least that's what I think he put together in his sampler. Each of those stews was delightful, and the bright flavor of the center salad was a nice compliment.
I, however, ordered Kitfo, and all else pales in comparison to my very favorite dish of beef tartare with a serious chile and cardamom kick. Ethiopian and Eritrean are Raz and my favorite, and not just because you get to eat with your hands. The spices are just divine, and the slightly spongy, slightly tart flatbread that serves as both plate and utensils handily puts all other flatbreads to shame.
The meal at Injera, served in true family-style fashion, all on one platter, was simultaneously exotic and homey. We couldn't stop extolling the virtues of the restaurant for the rest of our visit to the area, and decided that it's the first place we're going to go next time we visit.
