Dalakaffi
Breidamoerk, Iceland
August 28, 2018
Hiking Reykjadalur is one of the new rages of Icelandic tourism. There is no cost to undertake the 7 km round-trip hike, nor to bathe in the hot river. Dalakaffi is well placed as the only café, with the only restroom at the parking area for the Reykjadalur hike. This is how we found it. We were exhausted and looking to fuel up for the hike out to the hot river when we stopped in. We opted for their Skyr cake, which I will forever be glad we did. Skyr cake itself is a bit like super-light and slightly tart cheesecake. Dalakaffi adds seasonal local berries to top the Skyr cake. Basic, natural cooking is one of the fine arts we have rather lost in the US, and we substitute high visual appeal for it in most of our desserts. This is not so in Iceland, nor does this little tourist-driven café cut corners in the quality of their creation. The sweet-tart desert was one of the more amazing things we have put in our mouths. We are super happy that we got two portions, as neither of us would have shared that amazing dish with its creamy base topped with the freshest, most flavorful raspberries and blueberries we have ever experienced. Dalakaffi also does warm savory meals and coffee if you need a little caffeinated fortification before or after the Reykjadalur hike. For ourselves, we would drive the few hours from Reykjavik just for the Skyr cake itself.
