Comet Cafe

Milwaukee, WI

March 22, 2019

So Comet Café is famous, and since we were going to be within a half-day's drive of Milwaukee, we decided to take the side trip to see what all the fuss was about. We still don't quite understand, but at least we can say we've tried.

We did like the cafe's mid-centruy modern feel, it was very much what gets described as a family diner of the 1950s-1960s. We didn't mind the wait bettween ordering and dining either, since we knew everything would come out fresh and hot when it did arrive. Alas, our obvious not-from-around-here looks and accents may have been off-putting since we were fairly well ignored for about 10 minutes after being seated despite knowing what we would order before even walking in the door.

We decided to share the Meatloaf with Beer Gravy since it was the most famous dish on the menu, and added the Duck Confit Poutine because it sounded like the most interesting. Now don't get me wrong, nothing was seriously undercooked, overcooked, or lacking flavor. It just wasn't bowl-us-over, convince us to drive 300 miles good.

Our palates were thrown by the general sweetness of dishes that we assumed would be salty/savory, leaving the green beans that were basically garnish on the side of the meat loaf plate as the only dish we truly liked. Through trial and error, we discerned that the sweetness arose from the Beer Gravy, which was, unfortunately,  integral to both meals. We arent's sure if this was a result of too much sugar in a single batch of gravy, or cultural difference (since Comet Café is midwestern comfort food, and we're from a very different zipcode).  Either way, we're unlikely to travel the 1300-odd miles to try again.
