Coffeol
Bucharest, Romania
August 17, 2018
Most remarkable coffee drink I have ever experienced.
Coffeöl is technically a franchise operation, and I don’t usually review franchises or chains. However, this little shop on Strada Franceză is still the only one in Bucharest, and I haven’t experienced anything quite like the Madness anywhere else in the world. Imagine, if you will, a mason jar filled with iced café mocha or café au lait, then drizzled about with other flavor syrups. Add to that a 2-scoop ice cream cone (yes, include the cone) or a sundae, and complete with nuts, sprinkles, cookies, candy bars or other confectionary appropriate to whatever type of Madness takes your fancy. Each Madness is the equivalent of a 2-person dessert and after-dinner coffee piled and piled to this elaborate tower of sweetness and caffeinated joy.
If one is bold enough, like we were, to order one each, it should be eaten outside on the café tables on a warm Bucharest afternoon. This allows the ice cream to melt into the coffee below, adding its flavors to the strong brew. Don’t worry, the coffee is robust enough that if half the confection above melts into the beverage below, you will still have that coffee kick that alerts the taste buds to the caffeine about to hit your brain. The coffee itself is no more highly caffeinated than anywhere else, it is just quality bean which has been perfectly roasted and brewed to deliver maximum flavor. Little, if any, sugar is added directly to the coffee though, so a palate used to American coffee concoctions definitely requires the melting ice cream to balance the bold Arabica flavor of the brew.
