Cofetaria Alice

Bucharest, Romania

August 19, 2018

I was almost disheartened when I saw that the near overwhelming assortment of tiny confectionery immediately to the left of the entrance were priced by the kilo with a pretty significant minimum order. That was my ah-hah moment that this particular confectioner manages catering for large parties and events as well as managing to have ready dessert for the random passers-by like myself. I rather wish we could have gotten a box of a full assortment of the tiny confections, as we would have been able to try half the shop. Had I fluency in Romanian and the idea when I was in the shop, I would definitely have suggested packing sample boxes of the tiny treats for individuals to purchase.

As it was, we turned left to behold the confectionery à la carte cases. Each work of culinary art was larger than the miniature masterpieces on the other side, but the variety was no less mind blowing. Knowing with those larger portion sizes that unless we were splitting each 4-ways, we would have to increase our walking well over the 6+ miles we had already been racking up each day in Bucharest to have more than 2 each, we tried to select only the best ones. Yet each one looked so good, and we managed to convince ourselves that if we didn’t try them we might not get another opportunity.

Suffice it to say, there is not a bad choice on Alice’s menu. The absolute best of all our adventures, however, were the Mousse cu Fructe de Padure and the Rulada Monica. For all the world, I cannot tell you what the fruit was that gave the mousse its amazing color and flavor, nor what was in the filling of the rolled pastry that was so mind blowing, but they’re unlike anything we have tried in North America. If chocolate overload is your craving, the amazingly adorable Soricel delivers it. With a richness matched only by its cuteness, that is one mighty mouse!
